Midfielder Stephen Appiah joined Fenerbahce in 2005 in a four-year deal with an option for an additional year. He came to Fenerbahce after a successful campaign with Italian side Juventus. The Ghana native has made 65 appearances for Fenerbahce since, but has missed most of the 2007-2008 season with a knee injury.
Appiah has been a strength in the midfield for Fener, contributing to the team’s 2006-2007 Turkcell Super Lig championship, the seventeenth in club history. He has netted 15 goals for Fenerbahce since joining the Yellow Canaries. Prior to his time with Fener and Italian side Juventus, Appiah spent six additional years in Italy with Udinese, Parma, and Brescia. He began his career with Ghana Club Hearts of Oak.
In addition to his club career, Appiah has been a major part of his native Ghana’s international success. Their phenomenal run during the 2006 FIFA World Cup made Appiah one of the stars of the tournament. He also won the U-17 FIFA World Championship with Ghana in 1995 and finished fourth in the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1997.
Appiah has been left off the Fenerbahce squad for the second half of the 2007-2008 season to allow him to recover from his injury. His injury has also forced him to miss the 2008 African Cup of Nations Tournament being hosted by his native country, Ghana.
Appiah has a charity organization called the “StepApp Foundation” and recently introduced a line of clothing and shoes by the same name. The apparel line can be purchased online at his personal website, www.stepapp.com.
