Sivasspor Takes Clear Lead In Turkcell Süper Lig Table
Turkcell Super Lig • Author: Nathan Redd • Monday, January 26, 2009
Sivasspor opened 2009 much they like performed in 2008 - impressively. The red-and-white took down Galatasaray 2-0 on Saturday to move into sole possession of first place in the standings. Three of the league's top five teams are tied on points after this weekend, with only Sivasspor and Trabzonspor leading the pack.
Abdurrahman Dereli scored the first goal of the match in the 51st minute, but Sezer Badur of Sivas sealed the deal 15 minutes later to defeat reigning champs Galatasaray on Saturday. The Lions' Ümit Karan picked up a red card 45 minutes in, leaving Galatasaray with only ten men against the league's top team. With the win, Sivasspor collected its 37th point of the season, moving them two points ahead of Trabzonspor at the top. Trabzon grabbed one point on Sunday in a scoreless draw with Fenerbahçe to secure the second spot.
After Sivasspor and Trabzonspor, teams 3-5 are all tied on points with 33 apiece. That's because Ankaraspor used an impressive performance Friday night to defeat Konyaspor 3-0 to open the weekend action. Elsewhere, Beşiktaş used a Denizlispor own-goal to take down the Roosters 1-0 and keep pace with the top teams. Their victory moves them only two points behind Fenerbahçe for sixth place in the table.
At the bottom of the table, Antalyaspor picked up a much-needed victory over Ankaragücü to move them out of relegation fear for now. Tita scored the game's only goal in the 72nd minute for Antalya. Also at the bottom of the table, Kocaelispor overwhelmed Hacettepe to move three points ahead and out of the bottom spot the two teams previously shared. Taner Gülleri scored twice to pace Kocaeli in their 4-0 victory.
