US Defender Oguchi Onyewu Sends A Smile to Fenerbahçe

In an interview he gave to the Belgian press this week, Standard Liège defender Oguchi Onyewu hinted that the Fenerbahçe transfer rumours were true. Onyewu gave no comment about his transfer rumours but smiled at the Belgian reporter when asked about Fenerbahçe. Meanwhile reports also indicate that as days go by, Oguchi Onyewu is getting more and more suitors across the continent.

For the past two weeks now, US defender Oguchi Onyewu is being linked with a transfer to Fenerbahçe. The Standard Liège defender is currently out of contract and eligible to sign with any club. Fenerbahçe Worldwide had also previously reported that the Yellow Canaries had offered Onyewu a €2,3 million per year contract, the most serious offer in the 27-year-old's hands according to reports.

Despite giving no comments about his transfer rumours, in an interview he gave to the Belgian press, US central defender Oguchi Onyewu hinted that the Fenerbahçe offer was true. Belgian newspaper La Dernière Heure published an interview on Tuesday and commented that Onyewu had sent a smile to Fenerbahçe.

When asked whether he would take a vacation, now that the Confederations Cup is over Oguchi Onyewu replied, "Vacation? I don't know. It depends on the club that I will sign with, because most of the European clubs have already begun their pre-season training camps."

The DH reporter then asked the 27-year-old defender which club he would sign with. When Onyewu preferred to give no comment about the subject, the Belgian reporter began naming the clubs he has been linked with. "PSG? Fenerbahçe? Fiorentina? Palermo? Fulham? Birmingham?"

According to the DH interview, Onyewu smiled when the Belgian reporter asked about Fenerbahçe. The DH reporter commented, "His smile made us think that the Fenerbahçe rumours were in fact based on a serious interest. A three-year contract worth €2,3 million, not entirely false?"

While this interview strengthens the possibility of Onyewu's transfer to Fenerbahçe, the latest reports indicate that more European clubs have begun chasing the 27-year-old American defender.

Goal.com rumoured on Wednesday that Dutch giants Ajax were also in pursuit of the free agent defender. Ajax recently sold Belgian defender Thomas Vermaelen to Premiership side Arsenal for a deal worth €12 million. According to Goal.com, Oguchi Onyewu now has a total of eleven suitors: Standard Liège, Fenerbahçe, Paris St. Germain, Olympique de Marseille, U.S. Città di Palermo, Parma, Fulham, Portsmouth, Birmingham City, Rubin Kazan & Ajax.

I reckon this guy is Smart. He wil choose Fenerbahce..The only other possible clubs he could choose are Marseille or Ajax.

Ajax/Marseille/Fenerbahce are the only teams from his suitors that offer consistent European tournaments.

Marseille won't sign him since there main signing for their defence is supposed to be Servet who they are still in talks with.

Marseille have agreed and now its up to Galatasaray.

Ajax isn't that strong anymore..

Is lugano leaving or what? Act now fener!
polat10 • 13:46 • July 2, 2009
Lugano said this exactly "Fenerbahce is giving me the money I want but I just want to play in europe, I'm 28 and this is my last transfer" so I guess he's gonna be gone

its a bit sad that lugano is leaving on a free..i would rather have seen a hefty pay cheque going to Fenerbahce. I'd imagine Lugano could rake in 15 million euros at the least.

I dnt think he will go to Marseille, they've just sacked their president & will be licking their wounds.. He may indeed join Fener in the hope of getting European action but I think the Marseille offer (if true) will be our biggest competitor to his signature.
On another note, (and anyone can correct me if im wrong) is it just me or does this bloke not instill confidence with some of his on field decisions? Just seems a shaky at times - my only concern is that if this is the bloke who will ultimately replace Lugano, we may have problems in Europe.
But then again, i've only seen the footage that i can find online, plus the spain game. This is what my opinion is based on.

Servet is Marseilles top defensive priority atm..the deal is already agreed and needs to be sorted out so we won't hear from Marseille for a while.

Fenerbahce should make their swoop. Make it nice, clean and quick.

i thought lugano wouldnt go after scoring alot of goals for a defender but now he disgusts me, onyewu looks happy and excited to join fener and when he comes he will be happy at where he is and hopefully stay another 4 or 5 years, aslo what are we going to do with edu??????

The thing with Lugano is... He is good enough to play for a bigger team. Its the sad truth. And i dont mean a little better, to leave and go to say... Middlesborough for instance. The guy can hold his own for any of the big guns in Italy. I for one would like to see him go, he gave his all for Fener for three years and its time for him to move to the next level. One thing is certain though - It will be very difficult to find another with the same qualities. The guy was a f*#king rock!

As for Edu: he will most likely share the same fate as Luciano :)

edu will probably get his contract frozen or terminated...Fenerbahces not exactly a good place to be when your injured.

Lugano was discovered a bit late in his career so it sucks to be in his position if you are such a great player. Hes given us 3 years of great football and he should be able to move to one of the biggest in europe.

Its no use keeping someone at Fenerbahce who no longer thinks the level of football satisfies him. His work rate will shrink.

and how good is it going to look when people look at his career and see that it was Fenerbahce that brought him to prominence.

Vassell will run his ass off for Ankaragucu. After his first season with Ankaragucu I wouldn't be surprised to see him at a bigger turkish club.
onurhan • 15:26 • July 2, 2009
oh, pretty sad for the footballers who get kicked out of clubs because of devastating injuries and theyre not even past their prime, luciano was 31 but im not saying he was at his prime
emrahm • 15:27 • July 2, 2009
How good is it that an Anatolian team can attract this sort of player? I hope we will have another season like the last one with so many teams pushing for the title. Of course with us winning!

Anyone hear what Cihan Kamer said about Gala in the news?

Worth the read!
