UEFA Europa League MatchDay: FC Twente vs. Fenerbahçe
News • Author: Nathan Redd • Wednesday, December 2, 2009
Fenerbahçe are in Holland tonight with revenge on their minds. Despite leading their group in UEFA Europa League play, the Yellow Canaries have a score to settle with FC Twente, who sent them to defeat in Istanbul on matchday one. Kickoff between Fenerbahçe and FC Twente is set for 20:00 Turkish time (1 PM EST in the U.S.; 6 PM in the U.K.) from Grolsch Veste Stadium.
Fenerbahçe will automatically qualify for the round of 32 if they win or draw Wednesday in Holland. Even with a loss, the Canaries could still advance, although FC Twente will take over the top spot in the group with a victory at home. While Fener are still considered favorites this week, both teams know very well what the Dutch side is capable of.
FC Twente shocked Fenerbahçe in UEFA Europa League Matchday One earlier this season in Istanbul. The Dutch squad went into arguably the most intimidating venue in European football on September 17th and shocked the Yellow Canaries with a 2-1 win. Mehmet Topuz put the home side up 71 minutes in, but FC Twente scored two goals in a four-minute span, with Blaise Nkufo netting both. His second, a 79th-minute strike, stunned the Fener supporters and FC Twente left Istanbul with a rare 2-1 victory over the European giants.
Now Fener have revenge on their minds as they travel to Holland this week. The Canaries have won all three of their matches since matchday one, and they can cruise into the round of 32 with a win or a draw on Wednesday. Fener have nine points through four matches, while FC Twente have seven points.
Wednesday's contest matches two league leaders. Fenerbahçe lead the Turkcell Süper Lig with 31 points, although their lead has slipped to just a point because of two straight losses. FC Twente lead the Dutch Eredivise with a two-point lead over PSV Eindhoven currently. They defeated Willem II Tilburg 3-1 over the weekend to claim their tenth consecutive league victory.
The Canaries come into this week's contest lacking all the momentum they had earlier this season. That's because the Canaries have lost two straight league matches, giving up six goals in the process. They'll also be without two of their most important playmakers Wednesday - Colin Kazım-Richards and Emre Belözoğlu.
Despite their European prestige, the Canaries haven't fared well in the Netherlands. In seven previous trips to the country, Fenerbahçe have two draws and five losses. Wednesday's match won't be easy, as Twente have lost just once in their previous 13 matches at Grolsch Veste Stadium. That loss came to Olympique Marseille in last year's UEFA Cup.
The Yellow Canaries need a victory Wednesday - not just to seal their fate in the round of 32, but to earn the momentum they so desperately need after two straight losses. The team needs an improved performance all around, but strikers Şemih Şentürk and Dani Güiza must fill the void left by Colin Kazım-Richards. Both forwards have struggled this season, and with the Canary defense struggling recently, Christoph Daum and company will need all the offensive firepower they can get.
Fenerbahçe and FC Twente meet on matchday five Wednesday at 20:00 Turkish time (1 PM EST in the U.S.; 6 PM in the U.K.) from Grolsch Veste Stadium. Fans in Türkiye can watch the match live on D-Smart. Elsewhere, fans around the world can view the game live via pay-per-view on the UEFA website at www.uefa.com.

Are you sure about this? It hasn't been possible earlier this season. If it's true, then wohoo!
I should've been there, though. Too bad it's in the middle of my exam period :(
There is no rhythm and there is no short slick passes I expect a boring defensive game from Daum. If all you care for is results then you should be happy but I rather lose a game and play a good brand of football than what Daum is giving us.

If that line-up is correct, it looks pretty good. Glad to see Vederson on the pitch. I'd still prefer Semih up front, though.
