UEFA Europa League MatchDay: FC Twente vs. Fenerbahçe

News  •  Author: Nathan Redd   •   Wednesday, December 2, 2009 Picture

Fenerbahçe are in Holland tonight with revenge on their minds.  Despite leading their group in UEFA Europa League play, the Yellow Canaries have a score to settle with FC Twente, who sent them to defeat in Istanbul on matchday one.  Kickoff between Fenerbahçe and FC Twente is set for 20:00 Turkish time (1 PM EST in the U.S.; 6 PM in the U.K.) from Grolsch Veste Stadium.

Fenerbahçe will automatically qualify for the round of 32 if they win or draw Wednesday in Holland.  Even with a loss, the Canaries could still advance, although FC Twente will take over the top spot in the group with a victory at home.  While Fener are still considered favorites this week, both teams know very well what the Dutch side is capable of.

FC Twente shocked Fenerbahçe in UEFA Europa League Matchday One earlier this season in Istanbul.  The Dutch squad went into arguably the most intimidating venue in European football on September 17th and shocked the Yellow Canaries with a 2-1 win.  Mehmet Topuz put the home side up 71 minutes in, but FC Twente scored two goals in a four-minute span, with Blaise Nkufo netting both.  His second, a 79th-minute strike, stunned the Fener supporters and FC Twente left Istanbul with a rare 2-1 victory over the European giants.

Now Fener have revenge on their minds as they travel to Holland this week.  The Canaries have won all three of their matches since matchday one, and they can cruise into the round of 32 with a win or a draw on Wednesday.  Fener have nine points through four matches, while FC Twente have seven points.

Wednesday's contest matches two league leaders.  Fenerbahçe lead the Turkcell Süper Lig with 31 points, although their lead has slipped to just a point because of two straight losses.  FC Twente lead the Dutch Eredivise with a two-point lead over PSV Eindhoven currently.  They defeated Willem II Tilburg 3-1 over the weekend to claim their tenth consecutive league victory.

The Canaries come into this week's contest lacking all the momentum they had earlier this season.  That's because the Canaries have lost two straight league matches, giving up six goals in the process.  They'll also be without two of their most important playmakers Wednesday - Colin Kazım-Richards and Emre Belözoğlu.

Despite their European prestige, the Canaries haven't fared well in the Netherlands.  In seven previous trips to the country, Fenerbahçe have two draws and five losses.  Wednesday's match won't be easy, as Twente have lost just once in their previous 13 matches at Grolsch Veste Stadium.  That loss came to Olympique Marseille in last year's UEFA Cup.

The Yellow Canaries need a victory Wednesday - not just to seal their fate in the round of 32, but to earn the momentum they so desperately need after two straight losses.  The team needs an improved performance all around, but strikers Şemih Şentürk and Dani Güiza must fill the void left by Colin Kazım-Richards.  Both forwards have struggled this season, and with the Canary defense struggling recently, Christoph Daum and company will need all the offensive firepower they can get.

Fenerbahçe and FC Twente meet on matchday five Wednesday at 20:00 Turkish time (1 PM EST in the U.S.; 6 PM in the U.K.) from Grolsch Veste Stadium.  Fans in Türkiye can watch the match live on D-Smart.  Elsewhere, fans around the world can view the game live via pay-per-view on the UEFA website at www.uefa.com

Let's go Fenerbahce!
Aydan • 06:40 • December 2, 2009
Let's go Fenerbahçe let's beat this team and leave their coach a reminder of that Şükrü Saracoğlu hell he loves so much. Come on let's break our loser streak in Holland tomorrow night!
cercif • 10:52 • December 2, 2009
A draw will be enough to see the Canaries through to the Round. Twente was the only team that has beaten the Canaries in the group. Kazanmak için oynayın çocuklar.
Kozak • 10:57 • December 2, 2009
Guiza will score.
alperfener1 • 11:18 • December 2, 2009
As long as we play offensive football and support Guiza, Guiza should score a goal or 2.
Kozak • 11:29 • December 2, 2009
his goal against kasimpasa, despite our loss, was a beautiful goal. I hope we see more goals like that.
alperfener1 • 11:39 • December 2, 2009
I like to see more goals overall, especially from Guiza or Semih. Fener has been pretty slack when it comes to scoring this season.
macho-morten • 14:00 • December 2, 2009
"Elsewhere, fans around the world can view the game live via pay-per-view on the UEFA website at www.uefa.com."

Are you sure about this? It hasn't been possible earlier this season. If it's true, then wohoo!

I should've been there, though. Too bad it's in the middle of my exam period :(
fb_fan • 14:03 • December 2, 2009
we will win yo!That's what i believe in!
mtHead • 15:17 • December 2, 2009
Fener has not played attractive football since Daum take over. Quite honestly BJK and Gala play a much more attractive soccer than Fener. Guiza and Semih are made to look bad because of the brand of soccer we play.
There is no rhythm and there is no short slick passes I expect a boring defensive game from Daum. If all you care for is results then you should be happy but I rather lose a game and play a good brand of football than what Daum is giving us.
nathan • 15:34 • December 2, 2009
macho, I think it's dependent on your country, but it's available for me here in the states. Try this:

macho-morten • 15:50 • December 2, 2009
Bah, didn't work here. I can see Cluj's game, though... No logic whatsoever. Cheers anyway, Nathan.
GFBHollanda • 17:15 • December 2, 2009
Were gonna loose... Daum is playing scared today! He only hoops for 1 point! He is not thinking about winning.
Rapaz_Brasileiro • 17:39 • December 2, 2009
Daum always plays scared and he always hopes for just 1 point, so that doesn't mean anything ...
fb_thebest • 17:54 • December 2, 2009
bilica can play this game right?
Rapaz_Brasileiro • 17:59 • December 2, 2009
Bilica was banned from Superlig matches not from European matches so yes he can play.. Good for us because without him we would lose for sure because besides him and Lugano we don't have any good CB.
Temirov123 • 18:44 • December 2, 2009
Let's Win tonight!!!!1

macho-morten • 19:05 • December 2, 2009
Lionel, all you can do is check. I'm guessing it would be available in the UK, though, and that it will be about five pounds for a near-TV quality stream.

macho-morten • 19:15 • December 2, 2009
So much the better then :)

If that line-up is correct, it looks pretty good. Glad to see Vederson on the pitch. I'd still prefer Semih up front, though.
Mert_FB1907 • 19:24 • December 2, 2009
Hey does anyone have any good links yet? Cause im in the library at school right now trying to watch the game lol
macho-morten • 19:28 • December 2, 2009
Mert, look at www.atdhe.net and http://www.myp2p.eu/broadcast.php?matchid=56154&part=sports closer to the match start... Hopefully we'll find some decent ones there. There's also rojadirecta.com, as Aydan mentioned earlier.
Mert_FB1907 • 19:30 • December 2, 2009
Oh ok thanks macho I looked and its just a blank screen on atdhe.com but itll prolly come up soon. But come on Fener I hope we crush twente and I have a huge feeling that Guiza is going to score :)
Lionel_Hurmaci • 19:38 • December 2, 2009

That guy Stoch is all Twente has got today...
macho-morten • 20:35 • December 2, 2009
Yeah, TVU works well. The player is freeware, just google and download it and punch in the channel 21501. Decent picture and English commentary. It's perfect.
macho-morten • 20:37 • December 2, 2009
I can't believe we didn't score on any of our chances around the 20th minute. Wasting like that's gonna cost us...
fb_fan • 20:40 • December 2, 2009
thank you macho,finally someone agrees
yavuz • 20:42 • December 2, 2009
OOOH
macho-morten • 20:43 • December 2, 2009
I like Selcuk. His abilities are limited, but he's a bulldog!

Whoooo, off the inside of the post! We got lucky there!
Temirov123 • 20:43 • December 2, 2009
We need to take out Selcuk, he fouls and bring in Ozer so we can be offensive
yavuz • 20:43 • December 2, 2009
we need to wake up alittle at defence
fb_fan • 20:43 • December 2, 2009
oh oh what is going on with us!And Selcuk, look like you have forgotten to play footy man
Temirov123 • 20:44 • December 2, 2009
Bilica takes the free kick, he always should
Temirov123 • 20:46 • December 2, 2009
Good half. Guiza is doing good so far. But Topuz has not waken up. HE didn't have 1 shot. UMmmmm i think Topuz will go out.
macho-morten • 20:47 • December 2, 2009
0-0 at half time. Decent half by Fener I think, both teams could have and perhaps should have scored, but a draw is fair so far.
fb_fan • 20:48 • December 2, 2009
i think that Topuz is the best performer today!
Aydan • 21:03 • December 2, 2009
oh come on fb fan I use TVU also so some of us do listen I think it's great the only thing I don't like about it is the broadcaster singing to us at halftime but nothing a mute button won't solve. I think we are playing well so far we came so close to scoring!
macho-morten • 21:08 • December 2, 2009
Oh my god, Volkan, what are you doing...
RisingSunOnEurope • 21:15 • December 2, 2009

ANY GOOD LINKS MINES GONE
macho-morten • 21:21 • December 2, 2009
carlos, we're supposed to be the best team in Turkey, but Twente are the best team in the Netherlands, which is at least as good a league as the Süper Lig. So calm down, this is a tough away match and we're doing well.
macho-morten • 21:24 • December 2, 2009
Damn, Alex!

RisingSunOnEurope • 21:56 • December 2, 2009
macho morten thqanks for that tvu tip.. worked awesome.. btw does it show fener playing league games?
fenerbahce4life • 21:59 • December 2, 2009
Gokhan and Selcuk were poor. Everyone else was good but the shooting accuracy was bad.

But still i don't care, take that mclaren you loser!!!!
Fenerbahceeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!
macho-morten • 22:01 • December 2, 2009
No problem Rising, but it was in fact Aydan or fb_fan who mentioned TVU first :)

Don't know about the league matches as I have a Digiturk subscription, but you should be able to find something there. www.myp2p.eu always lists a bunch of opportunities to catch the games, hopefully some of them are TVU and not justin.tv...
Lionel_Hurmaci • 22:05 • December 2, 2009
hey does it worl like this.....1st of group A play 2nd of group B....etc etc....cos if so....we will probs play panathinaikos
macho-morten • 22:09 • December 2, 2009
Nah, it will have to be a draw. Remember, eight teams from the Champions League will join us in the next stage.
Aydan • 22:10 • December 2, 2009
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS GO FENER! take that mclaren!
macho-morten • 22:11 • December 2, 2009
What's the deal with Fener winning all their AWAY games this year, and not even conceding? That's not very Turkish! :P
Temirov123 • 22:46 • December 2, 2009
Lol macho. Winning away game is not Turkish it is Fenerish!!! :)
