Player Ratings - UEFA Europa League: Twente 0-1 FB

Commentary  •  Author: Mehmet Pozam   •   Thursday, December 3, 2009 Picture

Fenerbahçe qualified through to the next round of the UEFA Europa League, as they beat Eredivisie leaders FC Twente on their home ground. With the Yellow Canaries back to their winning ways, it's also the return of our Player Ratings! Fenerbahçe got their revenge against the Dutch side and there was one fighter who kept the Canaries defence solid. Fenerbahçe Worldwide Man of the Match: Fabio Bilica.

Volkan Demirel - 6.0

His inconsistent season continues. Was lucky to keep a clean sheet tonight; saved by the post on two occasions and a number of last second blocked shots by his defenders. Was lucky that the opposition didn't take advantage of his schoolboy fumble in the 59th, but many would consider this an improvement relative to his Kasımpaşa performance.

Gökhan Gönül - 6.0

Was given the task of marking arguably the opposition's most creative player. Did well on most ocassions, but wasn't at his best neither in attack or in defence tonight. Fortunately his 92nd minute clearance error went unpunished after Twente hit the post, then the follow up was called offside. (Mehmet's note: To be fair, he did make a very good run from the right flank in the 85th, made a good one-touch pass, and took a decent shot that was blocked by Boschker. However, in general there's still a fall in his overall performance rate.)

Diego Lugano - 8.0

Strong as always in defence. Once again kept a clean sheet and once again worked well wıth Bilica. Gave away unnecessary free kicks and was booked with a yellow card for his rough play and unnecessary handball. Scored the only goal of the night wıth a perfectly taken header to a trademark Alex corner in the 71st minute.

Fabio Bilica - 8.0 (Man of the Match)

Worked very hard and was smart in defence tonight. Went about quietly doing his job and didn't put a foot wrong in all the challenges he attempted. Cleared everything that came close to him and dived at any shots taken around him. A true Trojan horse tonight. (Mehmet's note: Undisputably the best man on the field.)

Roberto Carlos - 7.5

Worked hard in defence and in attack. With his games counting down to his departure, he put on a lively performance tracking back and making crucial clearances but also making runs forward. Had a well taken shot in the 24th minute, which was saved by Boschker. A brilliant goal-saving clearance in the 61st. (Mehmet's note: His crucial clearance in the 61st minute was proof of his World-class talent and experience. He was later subbed off because of a groin injury, proof of his old age and that his time has come...)

Selçuk Şahin - 5.5

Nothing special tonight. Lost the ball on a number of occasions and looked slow to react in others. Missed a chance when the ball fell to his wrong foot, which basically summed up his perfomance on the night. Might be harsh, but fans are used to seeing Emre and this performance was far from. (Mehmet's note: After the game, Daum commented that Selçuk had filled in well for Emre. That assessment is open to discussion in my opinion.)

Cristian Baroni - 8.0

Indispensable player that put on a World-class performance tonight. Worked hard in defence and a prime example was his constant following of the ball and diving tackle to stop a Twente shot on goal in the 72nd minute. Dribbled and attempted to create in attack which was also good to see. (Mehmet's note: Was undoubtedly the second best man on the field tonight. He almost won the team a penalty in the dying seconds of the game.)

Mehmet Topuz - 6.5

Worked hard and made some classy flicks and passes. Made a good run in the 23rd and put Güiza through for a chance. Good hustle in the 24th minute which led to Roberto Carlos' shot on goal. Overall a decent performance, but looks more suited to playing in central midfield which is where most of his highlights come from. (Mehmet's note: My namesake desperately needs more first-team experience. He will definitely be an important member of the squad in coming years. Daum needs to give him a starting spot for Ziraat Turkish Cup games and the formality Sheriff game.)

Gökçek Vederson - 6.0

Average performance by the new starting LM. Many would have liked to see Özer in this position, but Daum once again went for Vederson. Wasn't very involved in the game, but made no crucial errors and tracked back well to help RC. (Mehmet's note: Vede took a brilliant long shot in the 32nd, only to be tipped out to a corner kick by Boschker. Slid back to LB position, when Roberto Carlos was subbed off.)

Alex de Souza - 7.0

Not his best performance, but got the job done. A good header from a long throw saw him win the corner, which he subsequently took that led to the only goal of the night. Tight pressing from the opposition meant his lack of speed was exposed on a number of occasions and he missed a couple of chances of his own. (Mehmet's note: Alex should have found the back of the net. He missed some incredible chances tonight, including a last-minute one-on-one. He came close to scoring from his header to Carlos' long throw.)

Dani Güiza - 6.0

Worked hard and started well early into the game with a header on goal. His runs were superb, but receiving and finishing was his problem tonight and could have had at least one goal. An improvement on his earlier performances though. (Mehmet's note: Worked quite well with Alex on some occasions. He also sent the Canaries captain a beautiful long ball that Alex couldn't convert into a goal.)

André Santos - 6.5

Subbed into the game to replace an injured Roberto Carlos, but took Vederson's place and played as a left winger. (Mehmet's note: Came close to scoring on the 90th minute, when he headered a long throw in. Boschker tipped the ball from the corner of the goalposts.)

Semih Şentürk - 6.0

Worked hard with no prevail. (Mehmet's note: Was subbed very late into the game, in the 83rd minute. Therefore, didn't have enough time at all, to show his goalscoring talent. Wasn't able to get into any important chances on goal.)

Deniz Barış - 5.5

Was subbed in during stoppage time. (Mehmet's note: Deniz was only in one attack. He made a cross from the right, but the ball fell behind André.)

I feel that Selcuk did a great job. You guys won't agree but I really feel he played a good game.

I'd also give Guiza a higher rating. He knew he was doing well and he knew he should have had a goal in this game and I bet he would have scored the opportunities presented in the dying moments of the game. He played 80 minutes of a game but was still upset at being subbed off that he walked down into the change rooms, it shouldn't have been coming off.

Alex missed 2 free opportunities which is odd for him but he played well as always.

I felt Guiza played a good game. He created a lot of space for himself and was holding the ball and passing a lot better.

Billica was very poised on the ball yesterday and looked suprisingly comfortable.

I thought Mehmet Topuz was great yesterday, he has excellent ball control, and was giving Twente's defence problems.

Guiza did good, but just lacks that final touch to bury it. I hate how we always use the long ball strategy with him!
