Fenerbahçe's Andre Santos can walk with his head held high this week. The Brazilian star scored the game winner Sunday in a 1-0 win over Antalyaspor, snapping a seven-game winless skid for the Canaries. Santos spoke with Fenerbahçe TV this week and talked about what lies ahead for Fener this season.
Santos spoke with FB TV early this week about the weekend's win over Antalyaspor. "The supporters at Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium created an atmosphere for us to win, and it was a great birthday gift for me." The versatile footballer celebrated his 27th birthday Monday. "Winning against Antalyaspor was the beginning of our journey, and we thank our fans for their support."
Santos indicated that the win over Antalyaspor ended a difficult time for the team and gave them some breathing room in their quest for another title. "This past week was particularly painful for us," he said. "Because we wanted the results and were unable to get them for a long time, and it put intense pressure on us. We were able to find a little relief with the win over Antalyaspor. Last week we worked very intensely on becoming a more disciplined team. So the win Sunday was a big pay-off for our hard work. This is going to allow us to have a better environment as we prepare to take on Gençlerbirliği this weekend," he said.
"It's going to be a good match on Saturday. Gençlerbirliği is a good team and it's tough to play in Ankara. Of course, we'll work hard this week and we'll need to prepare ourselves well. Our goal is definitely to beat Gençlerbirliği. We must win every match if we hope to be champions," he said.
Santos said the team was eager to put the difficult period behind them. "February was not an easy month for us at all. Because of our results, it was a difficult and troubled period. We had a good meeting last week with our players, our coaching staff, etc. As a result, we all realized that the Antalyaspor match was a must-win," Santos said. "It was a good win, but now we have more goals ahead of us. Now we know that March will also be a difficult month for us. We have to take the lessons we learned from last month into March. We have a lot more work to do to get the results we want. We know what we have to do. We have to achieve the goals we've set for our team," Santos told the television network.
