Turkcell Süper Lig MatchDay: Gençlerbirliği vs. Fenerbahçe

News  •  Author: Nathan Redd   •   Saturday, March 13, 2010 Picture

Fenerbahçe are in Ankara this weekend, hoping to make it two victories in a row in Turkcell Süper Lig play.  To do so, they'll need to take care of business against a struggling Gençlerbirliği side in the nation's capital.  Kickoff for Saturday's match is set for 19:00 local time (12 Noon EST in the U.S.; 5 PM in the U.K.) from Ankara 19 Mayıs Stadium.

Last weekend was Fenerbahçe's first game in the month of March, and the Canaries couldn't be more relieved to turn the calendar page from February.  They won only one match during the month of February, and that lone victory came back on February 4th.  In the shortest month of the year, the Canaries lost their grasp on the top spot in the league, while being eliminated from European competition at nearly the same time.

March offered the Canaries a new outlook, however, and they took advantage.  Andre Santos gave the team the only goal of the match last Sunday as they broke their winless streak and defeated Antalyaspor 1-0 in Istanbul.  They've slipped to third place in the league table, but they are only two points behind rivals and league-leaders Galatasaray, with the world's biggest derby looming in just a couple of weeks.  Therefore, despite all of the troubles the team experienced in February, there is more than enough time to turn things around and make a serious run at the league championship.

Fenerbahçe won't receive a lot of sympathy in Ankara tomorrow.  Gençlerbirliği is having struggles of their own, coming in to Saturday's match having won just once in their last eight games.  They have only five points in league play so far in 2010.  The Ankara side have had trouble finding the back of the net recently, being outscored 9-3 in their last five matches.

To compound the problems for Gençlerbirliği, the team is facing a rash of injuries recently.  Defender Ivan Radeljic, striker Sinan Ayrancı and midfielders Abdülhamit Yıldız and Sabahattin Usta all missed Thursday’s practice session due to injury.  Additionally, Murat Kalkan is not at full strength despite training with the team late this week.  Coach Thomas Doll told reporters this week that his team has no room to be arrogant ahead of Saturday's match with the Yellow Canaries.

“Fenerbahçe is one of the best teams in the land,” Doll told reporters. “We respect every team, big or small, so we respect Fenerbahçe. But we need maximum points and therefore must go out there and put up a good fight against Fenerbahçe,” he further noted.

Fenerbahçe are facing injury concerns of their own, a problem that has plagued the team for much of the season.  Gökhan Gönül and Diego Lugano both missed practice time earlier this week, although both made the trip to Ankara this weekend.  The team will be without the services of team captain Alex de Souza, however.  The Brazilian star picked up a red card two weeks ago and will miss the second game of a two-game suspension tomorrow night.  Despite his absence, the Canaries were able to defeat Antalyaspor last weekend, but Coach Christoph Daum knows points won't be easy to accumulate in any match.

“The league has reached a stage where dropping just one point could be suicidal,” Daum told reporters this week. “And we all are very well aware of this fact,” he said.  Daum warned his players this week that despite the struggles, nothing has been determined yet.

“Everything is still possible in the league, and your fate is in your own hands,” Daum told his players this week. “So you must keep your eyes on the prize."

Fenerbahçe have won 14 of the last 20 meetings with Gençlerbirliği.  Additionally, the Ankara side have won only twice against the Canaries during that same time.  One of those wins came just last season, however.  Michael Jedinak scored just 14 minutes in last February to lead the team to a 1-0 victory over Fener in Ankara.  The teams last faced each other in October, with Fener cruising to a 3-0 victory in Istanbul.  Alex de Souza scored twice in that match, and Diego Lugano added a third goal to pace the Canaries to victory.

Gençlerbirliği are currently in tenth place in the league and need to turn things around to avoid any late-season relegation fears.  For Fener, every match presents an opportunity, and the Canaries are eager to prove that last weekend's victory over Antalyaspor wasn't a fluke.  Despite all of the struggles, the Canaries can return to the top with a win Saturday.

Gençlerbirliği and Fenerbahçe face each other Saturday night in Ankara in league play.  Kickoff for the match is set for 19:00 local time (12 Noon EST in the U.S.; 5 PM in the U.K.) from Ankara 19 Mayıs Stadium.  Fans can watch the match live on Lig TV and online at www.digiturkwebtv.com

Kozak • 11:37 • March 13, 2010
yeah he really struts his stuff on the field. If Daum doesn't work out I could see Doll as our manager. Hes a good guy.

I like Ertuğrul Sağlam a lot. He's made a lot of good achievments with both Kayserispor and Bursa, and did a decent job with Besiktas as well (despite that 8-0 lost to Liverpool). I think he would be good for Fener he becomes manager.

sageleader • 19:46 • March 13, 2010
This ref is definitely favoring us
polat10 • 19:47 • March 13, 2010
Second half, take out deivid, put in semih, take out vederson, put in ozer and make the line up like this.

....................Volkan......................
Gokhan.......Lugano......Bilica.........Santos
...................Cristian....................
Topuz.....................................Ozer
...................Emre.......................
............Semih............Gokhan

Vederson and deivid are the two worst players in the game right now.

another fener game consisting of the most boring football to be played.
sageleader • 20:52 • March 13, 2010
great, just great. we were outplayed
fenerbahce4life • 20:52 • March 13, 2010
if we draw this I have no hope this season. If we can't at least get second place next season is another waste of a year.
Kanarya • 20:53 • March 13, 2010
semih did NOTHING apart from giving the ball away and u people think hes better then guiza.
polat10 • 20:53 • March 13, 2010
ozer should have started.
sageleader • 20:54 • March 13, 2010
we can talk about should haves, but we had solid players today. Nobody was awful but nobody was good. Unal was the strongest player on the pitch and everyone else played like it was a game that didn't matter.
fenerbahce4life • 20:54 • March 13, 2010
another chance wasted. Im having flashbacks of that chance bilica was in and its making me angry.
polat10 • 20:56 • March 13, 2010
Emre, unal, bilica, and lugano were our strongest players. You see what i mean when bilica and lugano are the 2 starting centerbacks. Our defense is like a brick wall.
sageleader • 21:01 • March 13, 2010
We're now in third place, likely to be 4 points behind Gala and 6 points behind Bursa (once they make up the Diyarbakir game). Besiktas will win as well, making us 2 points behind the new 3rd place team. We are really screwing ourselves over.
fener1907 • 21:03 • March 13, 2010
All i have to say sell Guiza, Semih, Deivid, Selcuk, Deniz and Ali Bilgin and replace them with Mevlut and Sercan Yildirim, get Kazim back, offer Deivid, selcuk, Deniz and Ali for Eren Gungor PLEASE!
fener1907 • 21:06 • March 13, 2010
This way our Goalkeepers: Volkan Demirel, Babacan,Mert
Defence: Lugano, Bekir, Andre, Gokhan, Bilica, Eren and Onder
Midfield: Cristian, Emre, Topuz, Ozer, Vederson, Alex and Boral
Strikers: Unal, Sercan, Mevlut and Kazim
FenerNY • 21:08 • March 13, 2010
Guiza was greatly missed this game>>> for all those who complain about him I think this was proof enough. The guy creates chances, gets into space and is very good. unfortunately he hasnt been finishing. Also we had no right winger. topuz needs to go. he plays alex/oxers spot and I think hes a waste of money and space on the sqaud. hes a great sub but should never start.

This summer we need to bring in a centerback for Bilica and have him sub. A right winger if Kazim doesnt return. and a partner up front for Guiza pending how he plays alongside G. Unal. we also need to forget about this Alex mumbo jumbo... he plays with the least amount of aggresiveness and will to win. the only time u see emotion on his face is when he cocks up. Emre should be the captain every day.

Also I think that Fenerbahce from my view need a coach that is fun and laid back but who still demands discipline and respect. Someone like Zico needs to be in charge. When the boys have fun they play amazing. Fenerbahce has never been a team to do well under pressure. sad but true and it couldnt be more evident from when aragones was around.

basically we need a new strategy. we cant go out and make complete expectations. the only way big clubs win and have success is when the team as a whole is having fun. after all football is still a game. proof of that is in every sport. The NY Yankees, a baseball team who i support are the Real Madrid of baseball. they spend and spend $ but dont always have success. its only when they are out there having fun do they do good. and this was admitted by Alex Rodriguez, the Cristiano Ronaldo of baseball.

So yeah I may be going on and on but thats just how I feel about this team.
sageleader • 21:14 • March 13, 2010
Everyone on here complains about players. But the fact is that all of the guys in today (except maybe Deniz) have been lauded all season for their performance. You can't love Semih one day and want to tell him the next. We had great players in today, they just didn't play well. To me that's a sign that the coaching and strategy should probably change. Daum said he wanted them to be aggressive and I saw it a little bit today, but not a whole lot. Gencler was much more aggressive and put a lot of pressure on us - we turned the ball over a lot and couldn't get it past their mids.

We better hope for some miracles in these last 10 weeks or else we have no shot at the title. And frankly, if we don't win the title the only team that truly deserves it is Bursa.
polat10 • 21:20 • March 13, 2010
^ Your the one to talk, you do it also.
fener1907 • 21:23 • March 13, 2010
to be honest if we cant win i want 6s to win becuase i dont wanna waste a champions league spot who will loose all matches which is Bursa...inshallah i want FENER to win the title but if we cant i want 6s to win cuz they wont loose all matches in CL and i want us second Besiktas third and Trabzon fourth
sageleader • 21:28 • March 13, 2010
I really only complain about Deniz, Bekir, and Onder.
polat10 • 21:29 • March 13, 2010
I don't like to complain about players but if they are playing that bad I have to, such as deivid and vederson today. Topuz was really off form today also. We should have started ozer also.
fener1907 • 21:33 • March 13, 2010
Mevlut just scored hat trick for PSG...We need him!! he is fast and full of skills
polat10 • 21:33 • March 13, 2010
I want mevlut also, but some people on this site don't even want him to come to turkey.
fener1907 • 21:37 • March 13, 2010
well for the people who dont want him to come.. WATCH HIM PLAY RIGHT NOW!! he is like a monster!! Amazing dribbling, passing shooting, technique and speed and the aggressive play we need..if we dnt get him now then we will never because im sure Man City will offer 20mill pounds after they hear he scored hat trick since they care about goals
fener1907 • 21:39 • March 13, 2010
he is just 2 goals away from being top scorer which im sure next week he will reach that target
polat10 • 21:39 • March 13, 2010
I'm watching him play right now, hes a true beast.
Temirov123 • 21:39 • March 13, 2010
fener1907 players play good one day and bad the other that's how it goes.
fener1907 • 21:42 • March 13, 2010
Guiza plays bad everyday misses all 1 on 1 with goalkeepers which Mevlut can score easily by closing his eyes! Semih lazy from having lots of millions of euros in his bank account with his nice Bentley, eating from Sultan Ahmet koftecisi ..he doesnt run and looses every single ball to think about it i think semih just wanted 20 million euros in his bank acocunt and a luxury Bentley and Porsche then he can not bother after running after the ball! he just wanted money in his life thats why he became a footballer!
fener1907 • 21:44 • March 13, 2010
and for Guiza its explains it all just become the most expensive player to transfer to Turkey then he can collect his money every month and have a good time in the nightclubs but doesnt show his face to the media!
fener1907 • 21:45 • March 13, 2010
i am so angry Aziz promised 3 LEAGUES BACK TO BACK...if we dnt get that Aziz RESIGN! Ali Koc deserves to become the chairman!
Kanarya • 23:51 • March 13, 2010
its funny how people hate guiza soo much they blame him when he didn't even play. guiza is better then semih.
efe10 • 02:26 • March 14, 2010
semih has been on the bench for 8 years. i think semih is definetly better than guiza any day. the times that he comes off the bench and scores. all those last minute goals. important goals. qualifiying goals. comeon. you guys forgot all that semih has done.
alperfener1 • 03:01 • March 14, 2010
Unfortunately Semih is not doing that at the moment. We need consistency, especially in our forwards. We've got none of that.
