Guus Hiddink Turns Down Ivory Coast Job

It looks like Guus Hiddink won't be coaching at the 2010 World Cup after all. The newly-hired coach of the Turkish National Team had been offered the position of coaching Ivory Coast at the 2010 World Cup recently. The position would take effect prior to Hiddink officially joining Turkey, but a report this weekend out of the coach's homeland states that he has rejected the offer.
Hiddink wrote an editorial for Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf on Saturday, in which the coach states that he has decided to turn down the Ivory Coast position. It had been rumoured for weeks that Hiddink could take the job and coach the team through the 2010 World Cup, then join Turkey in August.
The Dutch coach told the newspaper that he worried taking the Ivory Coast job would have an adverse effect on his job with Turkey. "The Turks have made a huge impression on me in a short time," Hiddink said in the newspaper. He also stated that he felt he was an important part of their European Championship bid, saying "I immediately felt that I need to focus on Turkey."
Hiddink stated that he's been very impressed with Turkey's organization and level of commitment in the short time since he's taken the job. He went on to say that he normally would have taken the Ivory Coast job, but he felt that his commitment to the Turkish National Team was more important to him at this time. He also spoke about the team's upcoming tour through the United States, and how he was eager to evaluate his team during those matches later this spring.
Hiddink coached the Russian National Team prior to being announced as the new Turkey coach earlier this year. The Dutch coach is expected to officially take over later this year as the team prepares for Euro 2012 qualifying.
