Dutch manager Guus Hiddink arrived in Istanbul and attended a press conference where he signed the contract officially making him Milli Takım head coach. "The future of Turkish football is very bright. I was really impressed by the TFF's projects. From now on, I am fully devoted to the Milli Takım job," Guus Hiddink told reporters. Hiddink also stated that Turkey's Milli Takım will adopt an attacking style of football.
The Turkish Football Federation presented Guus Hiddink to the media on Monday afternoon. The Dutch manager arrived at Istanbul's Sabiha Gökçen Airport at 13:30, before attending a press conference at the Four Seasons Bosphorus Hotel in Beşiktaş. TFF President Mahmut Özgener sat beside Hiddink, as he penned his Milli Takım contract, while TFF Board Member Levent Kızıl and Milli Takım coaches Oğuz Çetin and Engin İpekoğlu watched the press conference from the front row.
Özgener was the first to speak, as he expressed his delight that Guus Hiddink will be sharing from now on his outstanding coaching experience with the Turkish national team. "After the Belgium game in October, we had stated that our new Milli Takım manager would have enough experience and knowledge to take our football to important levels in international football," the TFF President said.
"Right now, we are together with Guus Hiddink, who we believe will help us reach all our targets with his talent, knowledge and experience," continued Özgener. "Our restructuring process has ended. People who we believe can realize this new system have been appointed. A very important process for Turkish football is now over. Starting from today, a new era begins," commented the TFF President.
After Mahmut Özgener's introduction and video clips of Guus Hiddink's coaching career, it was the Dutch manager's turn to speak. "People were referring to my first stay in Turkey, when I coached Fenerbahçe. I don't want to neglect that bad experience," said Hiddink. "The result of the first game was a huge defeat," added the Dutch coach.
"At that time, if you had asked people I'm sure they would have said 'Please let him go home'. But times have changed," continued Guus Hiddink. "I hope I've got a little bit more experience in my profession," he said very modestly. "I'm very happy to be back to Turkey after twenty years," added the new Milli Takım coach.
"People shouldn't forget about their past, but they also need to look into the future," said Guus Hiddink. "I think the present of Turkish football is good and I think the future of Turkish football will be better," he commented. "In the past few weeks, I was really impressed by the TFF's projects and their EURO 2016 presentation. But the reason I was impressed was because I noticed that the society and government were also very eager," he said, adding that he will soon start preparations for the 2012 qualifiers beginning in September.
"Many of you will ask why I chose to coach Turkey. Of course, after working in many places around the world, I had a few other options," continued Guus Hiddink. "I always listen to my instincts and the most important point was the Turkish public's passion and devotion towards football," commented the Dutch coach. "I spoke with Mr. Özgener and he told me the other names they had discussed for this job. Of course I thought about taking the job, but not too much. It didn't take me too long to get convinced by the TFF. I am very happy and honoured that they chose me," he added.
Guus Hiddink and Mahmut Özgener then signed the contract officially appointing the Dutch manager as Milli Takım head coach for the next two years, with an extension option for another two years. Reporters also got the opportunity to ask 63-year-old Guus Hiddink questions in the Q&A part of the press conference.
The Dutch manager ruled out any possibility of also coaching club football along with the Turkish national team, mentioning, "From now on, I am fully devoted to the Milli Takım job. I will not be undertaking any other roles. Firstly, it's not physically feasible and secondly, we are here to do this job in the best way possible."
When asked about what style of football the Milli Takım will adopt, Guus Hiddink revealed that it will be far from defensive. "Turkey has very talented players and this country loves football. Technically, most of the players have the right attributes and I also prefer to play attacking football," answered Guus Hiddink. "People also want to see exciting and attractive football, so we won't be playing defensive football hoping to score one goal," explained the Milli Takım coach.
Hiddink also stated that he will be fully supporting Turkey's EURO 2016 bid and stated that putting a target such as 'playing a tournament semi-final' would only add pressure on to himself and Milli Takım players. "We have to be realistic. We should always have targets, but we always need to concentrate on our game. It's too soon to say, 'playing the semi-final would be satisfactory'. Let's do things step by step and concentrate on being positive and realistic," commented the Milli Takım coach.
When asked about his choice of assistant coaches, the Dutch manager stated that he didn't like using the word 'assistant'. Hiddink revealed that he had picked Oğuz Çetin and Engin İpekoğlu himself and he didn't rule out the possibility of hiring Pierre van Hooijdonk, as a future coach that can be very helpful to him because he speaks fluent Turkish.
