Turkish National Team Coach Guus Hiddink was in Istanbul this week to be formally announced as the new boss of the Milli Takım. After meeting with reporters Monday, Hiddink sat down with Turkey's NTVSpor for an exclusive interview and talked about a number of factors, including when he'll take over the Turkish squad.
Hiddink sat down with NTVSpor for an exclusive interview Monday and talked about why he chose to take over the Turkey squad rather than accept any number of other offers. "Of course there were other clubs and teams that wanted to sign me, but I talked to the Turkish Federation. First of all, football in Turkey is very passionate and I like when people are emotionally involved in football. Secondly, the federation made a very good impression. Third, what is important to me is that I'd like to add my contribution to the European Championship in 2016." The Turks are currently bidding to host the event in six years.
Hiddink was asked about his recent offer to coach Ivory Coast in the 2010 World Cup. "I was considering it and they asked me to do so," he said of the offer. "But it's very challenging. I did three World Cups, and it's very challenging. But [Didier] Drogba and the other players begged me to come. But in the end, I felt fully-hearted my obligations to Turkish football."
The Dutch coach was also asked whether he would accompany the team to America later this spring. "In the end of May, we have a trip organized and I felt that I have to be there to know the players and observe and work with them in May. That's why I think I made this choice. We're going to work for two years, and it's good for me to be with the players in May." When directly asked about the trip to the United States, Hiddink confirmed that he will be accompanying the team for all three friendlies during the tour.
The former Chelsea boss was asked if he is still under contract with Russia. "My contract is not cancelled, but my lawyer, etc., are talking with the federation to terminate my contract a little bit early," he said. Hiddink led the Russian National Team before taking over the Turks. His contract with Russia runs through this summer.
"We talked about two years plus two and we talked about terms," he said of his new contract with Turkey. If I like it after two years, I will continue for another two years, and if the federation is happy with my work, we'll go on," The coach signed a deal for a guaranteed two years with the option for two additional years.
Hiddink also talked about his predecessor, Fatih Terim, as well as the style of football that Turkish fans can look forward to under his regime. We'll have more from his interview with NTVSpor later this week here on Fenerbahçe Worldwide.
