Turkcell Süper Lig MatchDay: Fenerbahçe vs. Gaziantepspor

News  •  Author: Nathan Redd   •   Saturday, March 20, 2010 Picture

Fenerbahçe are finding themselves distanced from the top of the league table, but only six points seperate them from league leaders Bursaspor.  With crucial matchups still ahead, there is more than enough time for the Canaries to make up ground.  They'll also need to take care of business against teams behind them in the table.  They can start by collecting three points against Gaziantepspor.  The Canaries host them Saturday night at 19:00 (12 Noon EST in the U.S.; 5 PM in the U.K.).

Fenerbahçe have been struggling down the stretch, but despite their woes, just six points seperate them from Bursaspor at the top.  The Canaries have head-to-head matchups against two teams ahead of them still to come, so Fener have a chance to make up ground.  They'll need to take care of business against teams behind them, however.

The Canaries host Gaziantepspor Saturday night in league play with three points on their minds.  After a horrific February, Fener have not lost a match in March, but they'll need the maximum points in every remaining match.  That won't be easy against Gaziantepspor, however.

Despite sitting 10th in the league table, Gaziantep have been impressive so far in 2010.  They haven't lost in their last three matches, and they have only three losses overall in 2010.  They boast a 2-0 win over surging Beşiktaş, as well as a draw against Trabzonspor last weekend, and a narrow 0-1 loss to Galatasaray earlier this year.  Despite the recent success, Gaziantep have had some trouble finding the back of the net.  They've scored just two goals over their last four matches in league play.

Fener come into Saturday's match with injury concerns, but Christoph Daum is expected to shake up his lineup a bit to spark his team.  The biggest concern for the German boss is at the striker position.  Gökhan Ünal is dealing with a shoulder injury, and Semih Şentürk has had trouble finding his form.  Daum is expected to look to Dani Güiza, who is expected to make a return to the starting lineup Saturday.  The best news for Fener, however, may be the return of their team captain.  Alex de Souza will return against Gaziantepspor after missing the last two games due to suspension.  The Brazilian star gives the Canaries a much-needed offensive boost, although Fener were able to collect four points in Alex's absence.

Fener will need Alex's leadership and goal-scoring down the stretch if they hope to make a title run.  They're averaging fewer than two goals scored per game this season, although that average increases to 2.16 goals per game at home.  The defense, which was heavily criticized earlier this season, has not allowed a goal in league play since February.

These two teams faced each other in Gaziantep earlier this season, with Fener trailing behind 2-1.  The two sides have been drastically different since that first meeting, however.  Fener hope to keep their undefeated March going Saturday night, but they'll need to collect maximum points to stay in the title hunt.

Fenerbahçe host Gaziantepspor Saturday night in league play.  Kickoff from Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium is set for 19:00 local time (12 Noon EST in the U.S.; 5 PM in the U.K.).  Fans can watch the match live on Lig TV and online at www.digiturkwebtv.com

guys, lets be realistic here, we cannot win the lig this year. for gods sake we have to win this match just to be equal 3rd with besiktas, let alone come first.

Its not that hard to win the league... We will be third (over Besiktas) if we win today, then we win Besiktas at home, and thats its, we put them behind for good. We wing Gala at the Ali Sami Yen stadium, and we're in fornt of them at 2nd, thats what really matters actually, champions league, and for winning the title, we wait for Bursa to lose, maybe against Gala or Besiktas (im not sure who will they play, but they will llose for sure) and i hope Gala becomes second.. my hope for final standing:
1-Fenerbahce (CL)
2-Galatasaray (CL)
3-Bursaspor (EL)
4-Besiktas (EL)

and Trabzonspor also goes to EL if they hopefully qualify to final in cup.

I hope we thrash Gaziantep today. Güiza should play up front, not Ünal, not Semih. At least Güiza passes the ball around and keeps the ball up front. Semih and Ünal can't do that as much. Güiza runs and tires the opposition defence. If he wasn't any good, he would find goal scoring oppurtunities. Look at Ünal last week, he hardly had any chances on goal. I can say the same about Semih. Sure, Güiza misses a lot, but sometime soon it's going to go in and he'll win us a game, again. CMON FENER!

Guiza sucks bro. Put semih and unal up front to getter and u will see ;) i think we are going to win 2-0 today. Alex Ozer

Güiza , I hope you keep playing like this from now on. Long range shots are better for you then open net goals lol
sageleader • 19:41 • March 20, 2010
Why does Emre always do this? He asks for it every time.
sageleader • 19:47 • March 20, 2010
They are running their hearts out - keep it up Fener!
bpehlivan • 19:55 • March 20, 2010
that was a funny commerical...Lugano noooooooo!!! lol
skulaksiz • 19:56 • March 20, 2010
what's really funny is that alex and guiza almost switched places now. the pass guiza gave to alex was very similar to guiza's pass to alex in the lille away game, except the first time was a shitty pass, and the second time was comletely alex's fault, he just couldn't control it. guiza not controlling would be normal, but alex... we'd be 2-0 up now. tis tis. but the goal was really nice. made me think of nihat's goal in the euros, 3-2 against Czech rep. :)
sageleader • 20:03 • March 20, 2010
Emre out, Selcuk in
Temirov123 • 20:20 • March 20, 2010

polat10 • 20:54 • March 20, 2010
we were suppose to have at least 2 penalties, stupid ref.
Temirov123 • 20:55 • March 20, 2010
3 gold points.

Cheers bro's
sageleader • 20:55 • March 20, 2010
NICE WORK FENER! We should have scored more (story of the year) but at least we won.

Who saved us: Bilica & Guiza. They played great.
Who killed us: Deniz - every time he touched the ball he made bad decisions, but I might be biased :)

Alex didn't play the best but he's got to warm up again.
fenerbahce4life • 20:55 • March 20, 2010
