Turkcell Süper Lig MatchDay: Fenerbahçe vs. Gaziantepspor
News • Author: Nathan Redd • Saturday, March 20, 2010
Fenerbahçe are finding themselves distanced from the top of the league table, but only six points seperate them from league leaders Bursaspor. With crucial matchups still ahead, there is more than enough time for the Canaries to make up ground. They'll also need to take care of business against teams behind them in the table. They can start by collecting three points against Gaziantepspor. The Canaries host them Saturday night at 19:00 (12 Noon EST in the U.S.; 5 PM in the U.K.).
Fenerbahçe have been struggling down the stretch, but despite their woes, just six points seperate them from Bursaspor at the top. The Canaries have head-to-head matchups against two teams ahead of them still to come, so Fener have a chance to make up ground. They'll need to take care of business against teams behind them, however.
The Canaries host Gaziantepspor Saturday night in league play with three points on their minds. After a horrific February, Fener have not lost a match in March, but they'll need the maximum points in every remaining match. That won't be easy against Gaziantepspor, however.
Despite sitting 10th in the league table, Gaziantep have been impressive so far in 2010. They haven't lost in their last three matches, and they have only three losses overall in 2010. They boast a 2-0 win over surging Beşiktaş, as well as a draw against Trabzonspor last weekend, and a narrow 0-1 loss to Galatasaray earlier this year. Despite the recent success, Gaziantep have had some trouble finding the back of the net. They've scored just two goals over their last four matches in league play.
Fener come into Saturday's match with injury concerns, but Christoph Daum is expected to shake up his lineup a bit to spark his team. The biggest concern for the German boss is at the striker position. Gökhan Ünal is dealing with a shoulder injury, and Semih Şentürk has had trouble finding his form. Daum is expected to look to Dani Güiza, who is expected to make a return to the starting lineup Saturday. The best news for Fener, however, may be the return of their team captain. Alex de Souza will return against Gaziantepspor after missing the last two games due to suspension. The Brazilian star gives the Canaries a much-needed offensive boost, although Fener were able to collect four points in Alex's absence.
Fener will need Alex's leadership and goal-scoring down the stretch if they hope to make a title run. They're averaging fewer than two goals scored per game this season, although that average increases to 2.16 goals per game at home. The defense, which was heavily criticized earlier this season, has not allowed a goal in league play since February.
These two teams faced each other in Gaziantep earlier this season, with Fener trailing behind 2-1. The two sides have been drastically different since that first meeting, however. Fener hope to keep their undefeated March going Saturday night, but they'll need to collect maximum points to stay in the title hunt.
Fenerbahçe host Gaziantepspor Saturday night in league play. Kickoff from Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium is set for 19:00 local time (12 Noon EST in the U.S.; 5 PM in the U.K.). Fans can watch the match live on Lig TV and online at www.digiturkwebtv.com.

Who saved us: Bilica & Guiza. They played great.
Who killed us: Deniz - every time he touched the ball he made bad decisions, but I might be biased :)
Alex didn't play the best but he's got to warm up again.
